i have been doing what has been described in this article but found that 30 mins in fact was still too difficult so i changed the times to 15 mins less sleep every 7 days i am now comfortably sleeping between 3am and 7 am rather comfortably with what seems to be any ill effects this has been constant for a fair while now maybe 9 months give or take. although to get myself ready in the morning i go for a 2 mile run and this wakes me up indefinitely at 3pm i have my daily sports drink which allows me to carry on the final 12 hours hope this helps

Gradual reductions! HAR HAR HAR!
And..................NO! NO! NO!
I bet the 5 hour people were tired for other reasons. Perhaps they were convinced that they should be tired. There is NO evidence that they should be tired though.

Look, I did this. Works great and feel fine.
Go to sleep and wake up the same time EVERY day. NEVER EVER sleep in. Drop immediately to 5 hours a night and dont be a wimp about it. In two weeks you will find you have given yourself maybe 10 extra waking years to do whatever in your life.

I am thinking of going for a 4 hour sleep schedule. If Margarette Thatcher could do it so can I.

i have hypersomnia. i could sleep for 6-80hrs[till my body ached...]
after living my first quarter ,while preparing for USMLE, i experimented with gradual decrease in 'wake up' times. i ve found that i ll be functional[without change in usual beverage intake] if i could sleep at least 19 minutes over a 24 period.
as a result i ve made a habit of sleeping any time after 12 AM getting up usually at 2 AM . its been working for 6 months, i hope to continue, i ll be the one to scream if i suffer any ill affects.

People in the military seem to handle 4-6 hours a night on a regular basis just fine, for a year or more, especially during deployment. Or at least that was my experience.

Hello Jeff,
You mentioned that the time spent in REM by the subjects was significantly reduced. Don't we dream all the time in the REM stage, and relax all of our muscles?

Wouldn't it be bad to spent less time in this stage?

(sorry for my possible grammer mistakes, english is my second language)

That's very interesting and practical, and I just love the idea of it. Thirty minute decreases every 7-10 days is very doable and sounds like it won't make you fall apart like cutting off hours overnight does. Thanks for the advice (and for all the others in the hacks book, very nicely presented!).
