sleep warrior ur the best dude... u made it so simple to understand... can u also add a little bit of accelerated learning technique u were talking abt, i would love to know more abt it.. and a tip from my side which works like magic... there is a particular rythem of breath which corresponds to each and every brain wave u experience... if u some how learn to alter ur breathing pattern u can instantly shift between the desired brain waves without bieng dependent on any external support... few days bck when i was suffering from vry major insomnia n depression i went to this breathing work shop they call the art of living... they teach a breathing technique known as the SUDARSHAN KRIYA wich according to me works like magic... it can instantly get u in the delta n tht also while u r awake.... n then u loose all the senses, u dont know where ur body is.. n feel extreemly light n energetic bt personaly i fl these ppl charge a little bit too much.... if u r willing to spend sum cash n cn manage to get 3 hours daily for 6 days then this is a must try...

Hi Brie,

Regarding cell phones, quite a bit of research has been done, some of which you can read about here:

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=mind-control-by-cell

In particular, look at the study by James Horne at the Loughborough University Sleep Research Centre in England.

There has been a lot of discussion/controversy on whether cell phones cause cancer and brain tumors, but that's not what I'm talking about here -- I'm talking about how cell phones can cause slight alterations in brainwave activity (which in itself is actually not too surprising given how both cell phones and the brain work).

The cell phone effect might not even be terribly large. And it might not even be harmful (except for the possibility of it contributing to mild insomnia). But studies do show the connection exists therefore I found it interesting enough to mention.

Hi there,

It is an interesting read, but I still don't know what you actually measure (and how) wrt brainwaves.
Your prejudice about cellphones is funny. I am not aware of any published research that proved any influence, in a scientific and reproduceable manner. So you are free to believe in it as much as you like, but please don't call it a fact.

Thank you for the excellent article. There are computer simulations of neural patterns firing at youtube. That'll give people a good 3D representation of what's actually happening in the brain.

As far as what Radek said about the nostrils, there's an interesting phenomenon concerning nostril breathing, health patterns, and radiesthesia.

Every two hours the nostrils exchange predominant breathing patterns, that is, we can breathe better through one nostril than the other every two hours which is a sign of good health. When this pattern becomes stagnent, we know there's a possibility of getting ill, so we act accordingly.

We also use nostril breathing to act accordingly to the world around us. Try this experiment. The next time you visit a friend and you do not know if he will be home, place your fingertips beneath your nostrils and breathe normally. If your right nostril is dominant, your friend will be home when you arrive. If your left nostril is dominant, he will not. The same thing is true of anything involving an element of chance. Yogis say that if your right nostril is dominant, the venture will be successful, but if the left is dominant, it will not.

Hey Sleepwarrior!

Just want to shout out that the quality of articles you write is top-notch!

This is for the first time when I noticed that this thing is called Brainwave ENTRAINMENT and not Brainwave entertainment as I was calling it hehe.

One tip from me. It is said that you can figure out in which stage of BRAC you are by noticing your breathing. When you breath in more through the right nostril, your left hemisphere is more active and you are in energized state. When you breath in more through left nostril, your right hemisphere is more active and you are in the rest period. Try it, there is something about it.

Very useful article, thanks.

It's interesting what you've said about gamma waves, I haven't heard about them before, but I thought meditation is ought to bring you closer to enlightement and a higher state of consciousness. But that's exactly the other side of the spectrum, so I'm a little bit confused now...
